I'm looking at my latest pieces outside of the studio this week. This is necessary not only because it is good practice but also because I have too many things and I can't find room to put them to look at. Currently my wheel is out of commission (a blessing in disguise) since it is buried underneath the gems from my last 04 firing (have yet to be documented or addressed in anyway other than loving looks) and all table and much of the floor space is utterly smothered in objects waiting to be fired or combined with other objects and then fired. If I sat down and was honest about it I really need to stop making stuff for the rest of June and make the furniture for my work so it doesn't just end up on the floor of the gallery. I have an extreme aversion to plinths.
On Saturday I went down to Lethbridge, AB to give a demonstration at the Alberta Potter's Association Annual General Meeting. It was a fun afternoon with a great group of people and I thoroughly enjoyed showing how to make shard cups and ceramic petit fours.
Learn more about the APA here. Currently they are trying to find a new space for their communal studio and equipment. The Bowman Arts Center is being replaced by a newer, larger building, but the APA has not been included in the design. These are definitely hard times for the visual arts in Canada.

Apple Lumberjack Cake
Lemon Polenta Petit Four
Raspberry and Macadamia Friand
Sticky Date Cake
I'm back on the pastry train. Not so much the eating, it's more the looking and the recreating in clay and glaze. These are from a company called Manna From Heaven located in Australia, so it is up to my Aussie friends to sample them for me. I'll just keep making towers of ceramic biscuits.

This weekend is May Long, otherwise known as Victoria Day, and it is an opportune time to get outside and enjoy the beautiful spring weather. In my case it is a great time to get some work done for my upcoming exit show in just over a month. (Wait, what?!) So I'll be frantically making shard cups and corresponding trays, and piles of glaze with thrown cups sticking out. Among other things.

I've been experimenting with glazing at the wrong temperature. The first layer on these was a cone 10 glaze dipped thickly onto bisqueware and the fired to cone 04 so it would crack nicely. It was then fired to cone 7 at which time to pulling effect occurred, and now after a quick test to cone 3 with a cone 6 glaze I'm doing the rest. After this the pieces will be fired into pools of glaze and slip at 04, and then enameled at 020.

I was initially introduced to these pieces through a friend who (clearly!) saw some visual similarities between our work. As it turns out, we are both motivated by some similar issues and share some aesthetic qualities but are working with different concepts. And we both have ties to Maine. It is a small world.
Check out his website here.

Busy month, lots to do. First on the agenda is figuring out what to do with the pieces of salt kiln bag wall I hauled out of the trash.
